ANNA Nicole Smith’s slurred speech at the 2004 American Music Awards (“do you like my body?”) will forever be remembered in infamy.
The troubled star, who died in 2007, slurred and stumbled her way through her introduction for Kanye West at the ceremony, sparking widespread fears about her health.
But during an appearance on the Wendy Williams Show, 10 years on from Smith’s death, her former partner Larry Birkhead has finally revealed the sad truth behind her controversial appearance.
“Anna had a lot of health issues due to her breast enhancement surgery ... she had back pain a lot, she had chronic pain, she had seizures,” the father of her 10-year-old daughter shared.
“The night before [the AMAs] she suffered two seizures, and I tried to get her not to do that show — begged her — but she said no.”
Birkhead claims she “took something her doctor gave her” to keep her awake all night — because she was so nervous, not helped by her responsibilities as a weight loss brand’s spokeswoman.
“When she went out [on stage] they [the company] were like ‘you need to pitch this product,’ so she was like ‘like my body?’ and pointing to her necklace ... which was shaped like a diet pill,” he explained.
The “something” that Smith was given by her doctor was, according to Birkhead, a legitimate prescription — though he concedes she probably hadn’t stuck to her dosage.
“There was this misconception that Anna was out doing street drugs, but she had doctors treating her for these issues.”
He added: “Did she take her medicine like she was supposed to? Probably not.”
On February 8, 2007, Smith died at the age of 39 after being found unresponsive in her hotel room at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Her death was ultimately ruled an accidental drug overdose.
